왕멀님의 Game Developer's Life에 갔다가 폰트에 관련된 글을 보고 Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 라는 폰트를 알게 되었다.

Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 기본셋



뭔가 적응하기 힘들듯한 느낌이 드는 폰트지만 이 폰트가 다음과 같은 기준으로 따져보았을 때 프로그래머들에게 1위를 차지했다고 한다.

1. 또렷하고 깨끗한 문자들
2. 확장 문자 세트.
3. 여백의 적절한 활용.
4. ‘l’, ‘1′ 와 ‘i’ 문자의 식별이 쉬워야 함.
5. ‘0′, ‘o’ 와 ‘O’ 문자가 쉽게 구분될 수 있어야 함.
6. 여는 따옴표와 닫는 따옴표가 쉽게 구분될 수 있어야 함 - 반사된 형태가 유리.
7. 구두점이 깨끗해야 함 - 특히 중괄호, 소괄호, 대괄호.

사실, 마땅한 고정너비 폰트가 없어서 VS6.0부터 Fixedsys를 계속 써오고 있었고 심지어 VS2005 에서 조차 굴림에 적응하지 못하고 Fixedsys를 고집해 왔었다. 하지만 이 폰트를 받아서 사용해보니 다른 폰트보다 이 폰트에서 더 푸근함(?)이 느껴지는 것이 아닌가. *-_-*

아주 만족하고 있다. 왜 좀더 일찍 이 폰트를 알지 못했을까 하는 아쉬움이 든다.

    "6. 여는 따옴표와 닫는 따옴표가 쉽게 구분될 수 있어야 함 - 반사된 형태가 유리."을 열고 닫는 따옴표가 달라야 한다는 소리로 봤는데 한쪽으로 모양이 기울지 않고 방향성이 없어야한다는 소린가 보군요. 과연 코딩시 있을 수 있는 혼돈을 줄여줄 수 있겠다 싶네요. i와 L, 1도 그렇고 괄호도 그렇고 가끔 헛갈렸는데 저도 바꿔봐야겠어요^^ (코딩을 자주 하는 건 아니지만;)

    bitstream vera는 리눅스쪽에서 디폴트로 많이 쓰이는 폰트입니다. 레드햇에서 돈을 들여 폰트를 산 다음 공짜로 풀어버렸습니다. 다른 상용 폰트와는 달리 어디서나 마음놓고 공짜로 쓸 수 있어서 좋지요.
